Allergies

All classrooms are nut-free.  Please be cognizant of that for snacks.

Miss Avon is allergic to vanilla (both scent and ingestion).

Please note: Some personal hand sanitizers have vanilla in them.  Many of them use it as a base or secondary ingredient.  Please be sure to read ALL ingredients of the personal sanitizer.  If in doubt, please ask Miss Avon.  Thank you!

Masks

Sonoran Sky is encouraging the use of masks at school.

Make Your Day

Sonoran Sky uses the Make Your Day behavior program.  Our class will be using a modified version.  There are two main rules/expectations as part of this program:

1. No one has the right to interfere with the learning, safety, or wellbeing of others.

2. Do what is expected and do it the best that you can.

Consequences

If a student does not follow the Make Your Day rules/expectations or our class rules, then they will follow the Steps as outlined in Make Your Day.

If a student loses 6 or more points in a day, he/she did not Make their Day, and a slip will be sent home.

In addition, if a student goes to Step 2 they will fill out a reflection form (see more below).

Step 3 is a direct parent contact (email or phone call).

Automatic Step 4

•Inappropriate Language

•Fighting / Physical Contact

•Physical / Verbal Bullying

•An action or statement that threatens, harms, or endangers the safety of other students and/or staff members in any way.

•Horseplay

•Defiance

•Talking during a Fire Drill and/or Lock Down (for safety reasons).

Note 1: This list is NOT exclusive.  Other behaviors/actions may result in a ticket.

Note 2: Depending on the behavior/action, a student may receive a Behavior Ticket/Step 4 as a first consequence.

Reflection Form
The reflection form is a tool for the student to use to reflect on his/her behavior, what he/she should have done instead, and what he/she will do the next time.  This is signed by the student, the teacher, and a family member (parent) and sent back to school the next day.  A digital copy will then be sent via email to the family.

Report Card Behavior Grades Correlation

Reflection forms and Behavior Tickets will count towards a student's behavior grades each quarter on his/her report card as follows:

  • 0-1 times per quarter -- E

  • 2-3 times per quarter -- S

  • 4-5 times per quarter -- N

  • 6 or more times per quarter -- U

The Scoreboard
As a class, you will work together to earn as many Smiley Tallies a day as possible.  How do you do this?  Everyone needs to be following directions, actively listening, staying on-task with their work, and so on!  When the class is doing this, I put a tally mark on the Smiley side!
But...if the class is not doing a great job following directions, actively, listening, and so on, then I put a tally on the Frown-y Face side.

Your Goal: To earn more Smiley faces than Frown-y faces at the end of each day!
Why?: When you have more Smiley faces, you will earn an Ultimate Tally!  An Ultimate Tally leads up to bigger rewards like extra recess, free time on the Chromebooks, and eventually a pizza party with a movie!

Class/Yes

As part of Whole Brain Teaching (WBT), Class/Yes is a way to capture students' attention immediately and activate certain parts of their brain.

We will use Class/Yes as well as some other "Attention Grabbers."
Here's a few: (Teacher speaks/Students speak)
- Class/Yes
- Awesome/All-Star
- All Set/You Bet
- Hocus Pocus/Everyone Focus
- We are All-Stars/Bum-de-bum-bum-bum-bum-bum

- Yakkity Yak/ Don't Talk Back!

- Waterfall/Shhhhhh...

- ... and more!

Home Practice (aka Homework)
All practice must be completed on-time!
If a Home Practice assignment is not completed on time, the student is still responsible for completing the assignment by the next day.  The student will receive a Missing Assignment slip, bring it home for signature, and return it the next day.  Missing assignments will affect the "Turns in Homework on Time" behavior/study skills grade as follows:

  • 0-1 missing assignments per quarter -- E

  • 2-3 missing assignments per quarter -- S

  • 4-5 missing assignments per quarter -- N

  • 6 or more missing assignments per quarter -- U

Remember, Home Practice is to help us improve and practice what we learned in class!

There is no grade taken for Home Practice.

Missing Classwork

If a student loses, misplaces, or does not turn in a classwork assignment on time, the student will receive a Missing Assignment slip, bring it home for signature, and return it the next day.  Missing classwork will affect the "Turns Classwork in On Time" behavior/study skills grade as follows:

  • 0-1 missing classwork assignments per quarter -- E

  • 2-3 missing classwork assignments per quarter -- S

  • 4-5 missing classwork assignments per quarter -- N

  • 6 or more missing classwork assignments per quarter -- U

Planners

Students will fill out their planners at the end of each school day.  This is a wonderful study skill and organizational tool to use.  Students will write down their Home Practice (homework assignments) and upcoming events/news.

Take Home Folders

Students will use their take home folders to bring their Home Practice (homework) to and from school each day as well as any paper flyers/notices/news/etc.  In addition, graded assignments will be sent home  once they are entered in Infinite Campus (online gradebook).  Students should share any paper flyers/news and graded assignments with their families each night.  This way, the take home folder does not become thick and heavy.

Cell Phones / Electronic Devices

All cell phones must be TURNED OFF and remain in the student's backpack during the school day.

In addition, no smart watches may be worn during the school day.  If a student chooses to wear a smart watch to school, he/she will need to silence it and keep it in his/her backpack during the school day.

Unless stated otherwise, no electronic devices will be allowed in the classroom.  If a student chooses to bring an electronic device from home, it must remain OFF for the school day and stay in the student's backpack.

Any electronic devices a student brings to school is the student's responsibility.  Sonoran Sky Elementary School, Miss Avon, and PVUSD are not responsible for the theft, destruction, or loss of any electronic device the student brings to school.

Birthdays

Due to food allergies and to keep in balance with a healthy diet, food treats (any edible item) are not permitted for a student's birthday.  If a student would like to bring in a non-food treat for the class, feel free to do so.  Some examples of non-food treats in the past have been: fun pencils and/or erasers, temporary tattoos, bubbles, stickers, goodie bags, etc.  Treats are not necessary/required for a student's birthday.

Snacks

We will have a snack break mid-morning.  All snacks must be healthy--NO JUNK FOOD!  Fresh fruit or vegetables, crackers (ex: wheat, Goldfish, etc.), dried fruit, etc. are all fine.  Candy, cookies, chips, etc. are not okay for snack.  Please save those treats for lunch or after school.  If you or your child are unsure if a snack is okay, please ask.  Thank you!

Classroom Library

Our classroom library has many books of different genres, interests, and reading levels.  It is a place for students to select books to read for pleasure and growth.

If a book from the Classroom Library is damaged, harmed, or destroyed in any way, the student will replace the book or reimbursement for a replacement book of the same cost will be given.  This is to ensure the books' use and longevity as well as to demonstrate respect for the books.

In addition, Classroom Library books may NOT be taken home.  They are to be left in the classroom.  School library books may be taken home.

Illnesses

Now more than ever, it is imperative that a student stays home if he/she is unwell or feeling unwell.  With the ongoing COVID Pandemic, it is vital that everyone takes part to prevent the spread of the virus to keep everyone healthy and to help curb and end the Pandemic.

Students will need to stay home for other illnesses as well.  Even if it's "just a cold," a student should stay home until symptoms have subsided.  This is out of respect for the other students, teachers, and staff (and in extension, their families) as germs spread so easily and quickly.

Per policy, a student who has a fever may NOT return to school until the student has been fever-free for 24 hours WITHOUT the use of fever-reducing medication.

Students also should not share hats, hair accessories, brushes/combs, etc. to prevent the transmission of nits/lice.

Absences

Per the Governing Board policy, one day will be allotted to the student for each day absent to make up missing schoolwork.  For example, if a student is absent for two days, then he/she will be given two days to make up the missed work.

Pre-planned Absences/Vacations

Work will NOT be given ahead of time due to a pre-planned absence or vacation.  The student will receive the missed work once he/she returns and will have the appropriate number of days to make up the work per the policy stated above.

Computer/Technology Agreement

At the beginning of the year, students will sign a Technology Agreement to understand and agree to the appropriate use of technology in the classroom.  Any misuse of technology and/or not following the Technology Agreement will result in consequences and/or loss of privilege to use technology for a set of time.
